TQT: Emotional Intelligence

TQT: Emotional Intelligence
Today's quick thought is about emotional intelligence.

I've got an in-depth post coming Thursday about emotional intelligence - so clearly I've been thinking about it quite a bit. I'm going to go into more detail - background, definition, suggestions for building stronger EQ, etc - but I want to quickly show you how I segment EQ, and what it means. Others may have another way to break it down, but this works very effectively for me, our business, and our clients.

EQ has two major categories, and each of them have sub-categories.

The first is intrapersonal emotional intelligence. 'Intrapersonal', like it sounds, means 'inside the person'. So internal, inside myself.

The subcategories of intrapersonal are:

Self-awareness: the ability to understand and recognize your own emotions, and their impact on others;

Self-regulation: the ability to control or redirect disruptive impulses or moods, and the ability to suspend judgment to think before acting;

Motivation: a passion to work for reasons that go beyond money or status and a propensity to pursue goals with energy and perseverance.

The second is interpersonal emotional intelligence. 'Interpersonal' means 'between other people'. So between you and at least one other person.

The subcategories of interpersonal are:

Empathy: the ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people;

Social Skills: a proficiency in managing relationships and building networks.

Whether it is pop culture or business, emotional intelligence is beginning to become one of those buzz words that everyone mentions but few understand, and even fewer are able to communicate to others what they mean.

This is a helpful way to talk about EQ, and to communicate it to others. I hope it serves you well!
