TQT: Hiring

TQT: Hiring
~1 minute read~

This week's Tuesday quick read is about hiring.

I recently read a good article from Liz Ryan, an HR expert and founder of the company HumanWorkplace. In it, she lists 5 'Red Flags' to watch for in your potential hires. The whole article is worth your time, but here's the one I want to focus on:

"The candidate knows almost nothing about our business."

This should cause your ears to perk up for a couple of reasons.

1) Lack of knowledge: ask yourself, do you really want to teach this person everything about your business? or have someone else teach/train them? everything?

2) Lack of curiosity: I've talked before about the need for curiosity in a business climate that is driven by constant change and innovation. If they don't care to look up your business and learn a little about it, they'll bring that same attitude to their job.

3) Laziness: C'mon, how hard is it to find out something about a company today? A quick Google search and I can find your website, and from it figure out (in broad strokes) your industry, potential buyers, areas of compliance you'll need covered, etc.

To know nothing about the business that is interviewing you, in the contemporary job market, creates a negative perception. Applicants, Google the company you are interviewing with. And interviewers, make sure you ask this question.
