TQT: Jobs, Behaviors, and Adaptation

TQT: Jobs, Behaviors, and Adaptation
Today's quick thought is about adapting our behaviors.

And it is an argument for job benchmarking.

Try this exercise that we use when we are training. Cross your arms.

If you're like most people living, you have a set way that you cross your arms. It feels comfortable and natural. Note which arm you have on top.

Now cross your arms the other way, with the other arm on top. How do you feel? Normally everyone is able to switch their arms, but it just feels...strange. It's different, a little uncomfortable. Generally you have to think about it and be intentional in your execution.

That is what we do when we adapt our behaviors. We can do it, but it feels...strange. It's difficult. It doesn't seem to fit, and it is generally a bit awkward and challenging.

Our contention is that every job has a 'natural' behavioral style; that is, there are a certain set of behaviors that the job needs to be executed at it's highest level. And if you put someone in that position whose natural behaviors don't line up with the needs of the job, it will always be a bit of an 'awkward and challenging' fit.

The fact that it is awkward and challenging is not trivial. It can cause high levels of stress, which saps energy and motivation. It also has a huge impact on productivity, which in turn impacts your bottom line. You will lose time and money.

So clearly understanding the needs of the job, and then putting the person who aligns with those needs in the position, will provide immediate benefits. Connect with us today to start saving time and money.

And that's your Tuesday Quick Thought.
