TQT: Principles and Objectivity

TQT: Principles and Objectivity
~Less than 1 min~

I would guess most of you have not heard the name Ray Dalio before. Dalio is the owner and founder of Bridgewater and Associates, one of the biggest investment management firms in the world.

Dalio is one of 'those guys' - a certifiable genius, smart, out working everyone, systematic. A kind of reflective, Wall-Street philosopher. And when he founded Bridgewater, he founded it on a set of principles.

In fact, he believed in the idea of principles so much that he wrote a book about his principles that is the guiding document of Bridgewater. Can you guess the name? Yep - 'Principles.' (You can find it here.)

One of the major principles at Bridgewater is what could be labeled 'radical objectivity' (they call it 'radical transparency') - there is a relentless search to see an issue from all sides, in order to make sure that a blind spot is avoided and the best possible outcome is reached.

To that end, the employees at Bridgewater can - and do - challenge any other employee, from the lowest intern to the highest firm partner. As long as they can present their case effectively and logically, they will be listened to.

Here's Dalio: 'More than anything else, what differentiates people who live up to their potential from those who don't is a willingness to look at themselves and others objectively.'

Objectivity - it is one of the most difficult things to achieve in our lives and our businesses. Dalio understands this, and set up a system to make his culture more objective.
