TQT: Self-Discipline

Today's quick thought is about self-discipline.

With one of our clients we have been doing a lunchtime book club throughout the fall centered around John Maxwell's Developing the Leader Within You. It is a great book, and Maxwell is one of the definitive voices on leading and development in the world.

We are currently looking at the chapter on self-discipline, appropriately enough since it is the holiday season when we tend to slack on that particular front.

Have a cheat season - New Year's is just around the corner!

Hopefully this will help you get a head start on those resolutions, or at least provide a backstop in the new year!

In the chapter, Maxwell gives a '10-step plan' for increasing your self-discipline. While it is simple to comprehend, implementation is always the difficult part.

1) List five areas of your life that lack discipline.

2) Rank them in your order of priority.

3) Take them on, one at a time.

4) Secure resources - books, podcasts, or other areas of instruction that can help you.

5) Ask a person who models discipline in this area to hold you accountable.

6) Spend 15 minutes each morning getting focused on this area - remind yourself why you are working on this and what the reward will be when you get it under control.

7) 5 minute midday checkup - to take a temperature of how you are doing.

8) 5 minute evening checkup - to recap on the days successes and learn from setbacks.

9) Allow 60 days to work on one area before going to the next.

10) Celebrate your success when achieved!

Our habits and behaviors are difficult to change without planning and intentionality. Perseverance is key - don't quit! Keep working at it, and use this plan to help you.

And that's your Tuesday Quick thought.
