TQT: The Power of Motivation

TQT: The Power of Motivation
Today's thought is about motivation.

How often do you think about motivation, what drives you to action

My experience, as I've talked with thousands of people over the past 3 years in dozens of businesses, is that people rarely think about what motivates them. It is even more uncommon for me to talk with someone who knows what motivates their staff.

I don't mean that hatefully - just because you don't know what motivates your staff doesn't mean you don't care about them or want them to succeed personally and professionally. It's just that motivation is one of those 'soft' issues that busy executives and leaders start to miss as their schedules fill up.

On top of that, it's often difficult to put words to what motivates us. Personally, it's one of those 'I know it when I feel it' types of things, and at the staff level most leaders default to the two biggies: recognition and pay.

Those are good places to start, but they are not enough to drive peak performance and morale.

What if you could figure out what motivates your employees? Even better: once you know what motivates them, what if you could line up those motivations with a job?

For instance, let's say someone is motivated by the search for knowledge; by being able to study ideas and concepts and apply them for the success of your business.

If you put that person in a job where they do not have the opportunity to study, think, and learn new ideas, they are not going to be motivated - they are going to be miserable. And pay or recognition is NOT going to be able to overcome that deficit!

But, if you know their driving forces, you would be able to align them with a job that naturally motivates them - saving you time and money, and instantly increasing your productivity.

People are complex, and have many different motivations. Identifying them is key.
